Linode Akamai United States Chicago Shared CPU Cloud Hosting Test and Review
In this round, we’ll conduct a thorough performance assessment of the Linode Akamai Shared vCPU VPS Server in Chicago, United States. Run with an AMD EPYC 7713 64-core Processor, the server boasts two CPU cores, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD storage, and a 4 Gbps internet port. It also comes with 4 TB traffic and includes an IPv4 and IPv6 address.
Our in-depth evaluation is constructed around a multitude of comprehensive examination procedures. These include the Basic Benchmark, Yabs, and Unix Benchmark tests, which provide foundational performance parameters. Subsequently, we employ the Global Node Test for a wide-ranged network review, complementing the Global Ping Test to gauge latency attributes.
To ensure a comprehensive understanding of region-specific accessibility, we execute the Media Unlock Test. The CloudFlare Internet Test validates the quality of the connection. Finally, we apply the biaxial approach of PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix Performance evaluations to delve into the server’s web performance specifics. These exhaustive tests aim to provide an insightful and comprehensive depiction of the server’s overall performance capabilities.

Admin Control Panel
Linode’s Cloud Manager furnishes a seamless user interface to organize your Linodes, monitor billing details, and adjust account settings. You can even delegate access to your Linode Cloud Manager account by setting up user profiles and specifying permissions to fortify the control panel against potential misuse. This feature proves instrumental for teams desiring to offer all members essential access to the Linode Cloud Manager and businesses seeking to segregate the billing division with its account to manage invoices and fiscal information.
This intuitive Cloud Manager facilitates various user-related tasks, such as viewing existing users, adding new users, retrieving forgotten usernames, removing users, and renaming usernames. Extreme flexibility is offered in the user creation process, facilitating either full, unrestricted, or tailored, restricted access according to precise needs. For comprehensive information about user permissions, please reference the ‘Set User Permissions’ segment.
Besides its user management capacity, the Cloud Manager yields access to remarkable features like the Linode Marketplace. This space allows you to deploy esteemed applications, such as phpMyAdmin, swiftly. Moreover, it houses the Kubernetes Dashboard, which is engineered to aid in efficiently administrating your Kubernetes clusters on Linode Kubernetes Engine (LKE).
Marketplace
The Linode Marketplace is a comprehensive digital repository for developers and businesses aiming to simplify cloud deployments through intuitive one-click applications and tools. It empowers you to swiftly set up software on a Compute Instance via the Cloud Manager, streamlining the application deployment process.
Immerse yourself in the vast selection of pre-set applications and services you can launch within seconds. Favorites like WordPress, Minecraft, and GitLab are a mere click away, alongside an ever-expanding portfolio.
The Marketplace doesn’t just stop at providing an impressive variety – it excels in centralization, offering you a unified management platform. The Linode Marketplace unifies speedy deployment, expansive options, and consolidated cloud management, shaping itself as a comprehensive hub for all your cloud-related needs.
Server Pricing
Linode presents a variety of Shared CPU plans that furnish a balanced set of resources apt for numerous applications. These plans represent Linode’s most cost-effective virtual machines, boasting a significant value-to-performance ratio. It’s important to mention that unlike most of Linode’s other Compute Instance models – which come equipped with dedicated CPUs – Shared Instances do not. Consequently, CPU resources are shared amongst multiple Compute Instances, potentially leading to mild resource contention.
Shared CPU plans are optimized for development and staging servers, low-traffic websites, personal blogs, and production applications that remain impervious to resource contention. The pricing for these Shared CPU plans commences at $5 per month, which affords you a Shared CPU Compute Instance featuring 1 vCPU core, 1GB of memory, and 25GB of SSD storage. Please refer to the Linode Pricing page for additional plans and related costs.

Payments
Linode’s versatility extends to its wide range of accepted payment methods. You can pay with all major credit and debit cards, including those issued by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, and UnionPay. This extends to digital options like Google Pay and PayPal but with some restrictions.
If you’re using Google Pay, remember that only credit or debit cards and PayPal can be utilized for payments. At the same time, your Google Pay balance or associated bank accounts are currently unsupported.
If you prefer PayPal, Linode accepts payments directly from your PayPal balance, credit or debit cards, or from a bank account linked to your PayPal account.
For those wanting to use more traditional methods such as check, ACH, or wire transfer, Linode assists their Support team in facilitating these transactions, ensuring ease and convenience in your financial interactions with them.

Conclusion
In this performance evaluation, we scrutinized the Linode Akamai Shared vCPU VPS Server in Chicago, United States. Under the hood, this server operates with an AMD EPYC 7713 64-core Processor featuring two CPU cores, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD storage, and a 4 Gbps internet port. It offers additional features such as 4 TB traffic, along with an IPv4 and IPv6 address.
Three uninterrupted I/O speed tests showed escalating performance, culminating in an average speed of 1604.3 MB/s. Upload and download speeds were evaluated across multiple geographical locations, ranging from top speeds in the United States to notably slower performances in Nanjing and Hong Kong, China. Not surprisingly, latency increased with distance, hitting peak values in Singapore and Japan. These trials were undertaken efficiently, concluding in slightly under five minutes.
To further probe the server’s capacity, various mixed read/write disk speed tests under different block sizes were conducted using Fio. The server showed robust performance, with speeds soaring to 9.26 GB/s and 9.88 GB/s for 1m block sizes in read and write tests, respectively. Moreover, its Geekbench 6 Benchmark Test results reflected the server’s processing prowess, with a single-core score of 1246 and a multi-core score of 2240.
The UnixBench suite was deployed to measure CPU performance comprehensively. Two benchmark runs were conducted, the first using 1 parallel copy of tests and the second running 2 parallel copies. The server demonstrated escalating performance, with the system benchmarks index score surging from 1912.6 to 3242.7 when two CPUs were used.
The Linode Akamai Shared vCPU VPS Server demonstrated robust performance across various tests, with exceedingly high processing speeds, reading and writing speeds, and respectable performances in global connectivity tests. The server shows its extremes when operating at two CPUs, rendering strong indicators of reliable, high-capacity functioning crucial in modern digital environments. These test results underscore its strength as a viable choice for dynamic and resource-intensive tasks.
