Conclusion
Our initial checks confirmed the server’s specifications. The operating system is Debian 11, a popular and stable Linux distribution. We saw the expected CPU frequency and cache sizes, and important security features like AES-NI (for faster encryption) and VM-x/AMD-V (for virtualization) are enabled. The server uses the modern “bbr” TCP congestion control algorithm, which can improve network performance.
Performance testing revealed mixed results. While RAM read/write speeds were respectable, averaging around 1814 MB/s for reads and 1304 MB/s for writes, disk I/O was a definite bottleneck. Standard dd tests showed write speeds of only 4.1 MB/s with 4K blocks, although this improved significantly to 269 MB/s with larger 1MB blocks. More comprehensive fio tests confirmed this pattern, with significantly lower performance for smaller block sizes. This suggests the server is better suited for tasks involving larger files rather than numerous small file operations. Geekbench 6 scores were low.
Network performance, on the other hand, was generally good. Using iperf3, we tested connections to various global locations. We achieved solid speeds to locations like Los Angeles (747 Mbps send / 641 Mbps receive) and Amsterdam (415 Mbps send / 606 Mbps receive). Latency (ping times) were as expected based on geographical distance. Media unlocking tests showed mixed results, with access to YouTube Premium and Amazon Prime Video, but Netflix only showed “Originals.” Many email ports are blocked. The IP address has a high fraud score.
In Conclusion: The GTHost VPS-5 plan offers a very affordable entry point for basic web hosting needs, particularly if your workload involves transferring larger files and you prioritize network connectivity over raw disk speed. However, the slow disk I/O performance, low Geekbench scores, and high fraud score for the IP address, are significant limitations to consider. This server is best for users with modest performance requirements and a tight budget, where network speed is more crucial than local disk performance.
