We recently tested Servers Guru‘s entry-level Amsterdam VPS, priced at €5.49 monthly. This plan features an Intel Xeon E5-2698 v3 processor, 2 CPU cores, 2GB of RAM, a 20GB NVMe SSD, and a 1Gbps port with 5TB of monthly outbound traffic. We wanted to see how this budget-friendly option stacks up for real-world use. Our testing focused on the key areas: CPU performance, memory speed, disk I/O, and network capabilities.
The server runs Debian 11, a popular and stable Linux distribution. It uses KVM virtualization, a solid choice for performance and isolation. Initial benchmarks presented a mixed bag. The Geekbench 5 scores were quite low, with a single-core score of 124 and a multi-core score of 209, and the Geekbench 6 test failed. However, RAM read/write speeds were impressive, hitting over 17,000 MB/s for reads and 13,000 MB/s for writes in our fast-mode test. Disk I/O was a bit of a bottleneck. While read speeds improved with larger block sizes, reaching 382 MB/s with 1MB blocks, write speeds started much lower. The Fio tests showed more consistent, though still modest, read and write performance across various block sizes.
Network performance was variable. While the server achieved nearly 5 Gbps send speeds to a nearby server in Amsterdam, speeds to other locations worldwide were significantly lower, often in the single-digit Mbps range. Ping times were generally good within Europe, but increased considerably to locations further afield. Streaming service unblocking was a mixed success; Netflix only showed Originals, while Amazon Prime Video and YouTube Premium worked. The IP address had some flags for potential VPN/proxy use but generally had a low threat score. Email port tests showed all local ports open, but connections to major email providers failed.
The Servers Guru €5.49 Amsterdam VPS offers a decent foundation for basic hosting needs, particularly if your target audience is primarily in Europe. The fast RAM and NVMe SSD are definite pluses. However, the low CPU benchmark scores, inconsistent disk I/O, and variable network performance suggest it’s best suited for lightweight applications or websites with modest traffic. Consider your specific requirements carefully before committing.
