Conclusion
The server’s storage speed proved to be its weakest point. Averaging around 109 MB/s in our I/O tests, the SSD falls short of our expectations for decent performance (above 500 MB/s) and lands squarely in the “poor” category. This could lead to slower loading times for websites and applications hosted on this server.
On the other hand, the CPU performed admirably. A single-core score of 1213 on Geekbench 6 puts it comfortably in the “good” range, indicating it can handle demanding single-threaded tasks effectively. The multi-core score of 2260 also suggests decent performance for multi-threaded applications.
Network speeds from the Los Angeles test location were blazing fast, as expected. However, speeds to international locations varied considerably. While connections to major cities like Tokyo and Amsterdam showed good download speeds, performance in Hong Kong was exceptionally poor. This highlights the importance of considering the target audience location when choosing a server.
Finally, while we conducted further tests using tools like YABS, Global Ping Test, Media Unlock Test, CloudFlare Internet Test, PageSpeed Insights, and GTmetrix (results not detailed here), the storage speed and variable international network performance are key takeaways.
In conclusion, the Zenlayer z2a.cpu.2 instances in Los Angeles show promise with its good CPU performance. However, the slow storage speed is a significant drawback. While local network speeds are excellent, users targeting a global audience should carefully consider the performance variations observed in our international network tests. This server might be suitable for CPU-intensive tasks with limited storage needs and a primarily local user base.
