HostVDS Finland Helsinki Highload Intel Xeon Cloud Server Test and Review

We just tested the HostVDS Finland Helsinki Highload Cloud Server. It runs on an Intel Core Processor (Broadwell, IBRS) and has the following specs: 2 cores CPU, 8 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD storage, 10 Gbps internet port, 5 TB traffic, 1x IPv4 address.

Here’s what we covered in our review: basic performance benchmarks, Yabs and Unix performance tests, network speed tests from various locations, and latency measurements with global ping tests. We also checked media access with The Media Unlock Test and assessed connection quality using the Cloudflare Internet Test. For web performance, we used PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix.

About HostVDS

HostVDS offers various services, but its primary offering is Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting. VPS hosting is a type of hosting that uses virtualization technology to provide you with dedicated resources on a server with multiple users. It’s a more secure and stable solution than shared hosting, where you don’t get a dedicated server space. However, it’s smaller scale and cheaper than renting an entire server.

One of the first things you’ll notice about HostVDS is its affordability. The company offers budget-friendly VPS plans, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a cost-effective hosting service. But don’t let the low prices fool you. Despite its affordability, HostVDS doesn’t compromise on quality or performance.

The control panel of HostVDS is simple and user-friendly, making it easy for beginners to navigate1. You can choose resources and deploy servers hourly, which is great for short-term projects. This flexibility is a significant advantage of HostVDS, as it allows you to scale your resources based on your needs.

HostVDS also offers a variety of VM templates, giving you the freedom to choose the best fit for your project. Moreover, it provides direct access to OpenStack (Horizon) API, a feature experienced users will appreciate.

Another notable feature of HostVDS is its active support system. The support team is responsive and helpful, ensuring that any issues you encounter are resolved promptly. This level of customer service is crucial in the web hosting industry, where any downtime can lead to significant losses.

Despite its many advantages, HostVDS has a few areas to improve. For instance, it has limited server locations. While this may not be a deal-breaker for some, it could impact the global reach of your website. Additionally, HostVDS does not yet support IPv6, a newer Internet Protocol version that provides an identification and location system for computers on networks and routes traffic across the Internet.

Conclusion

For the Basic Bench, we evaluated I/O speeds and network performance. The server averaged 479.7 MB/s in I/O speed over three runs, which is good. Upload speeds peaked at 3832.76 Mbps, while download speeds reached 4921.33 Mbps, showing excellent performance.

The Yabs Performance Bench test also revealed robust disk performance. For 4k block sizes, the server managed read and write speeds around 40 MB/s, while larger block sizes (64k and above) averaged over 1 GB/s, peaking at 2.48 GB/s. This indicates the server handles mixed read/write operations very effectively.

On the Geekbench 6 benchmark, the server scored 559 on single-core performance and 970 on multi-core performance. These results place it at an average standard for single-core operations and slightly below average in multi-core performance compared to contemporary servers.

UnixBench tests provided further insights into the CPU’s capacity. The server delivered impressive throughput numbers, especially in file copy operations and process creation metrics. For example, the file copy speed with a 4096 bufsize maxed out at an impressive 1.5 million KBps. The overall System Benchmarks Index Score was 567.3 for single-core and 1106.8 for multi-core operations.

In conclusion, the HostVDS Finland Helsinki Highload Cloud Server demonstrates solid performance in disk I/O, sufficient CPU capabilities, and outstanding network speeds for most regions. It’s an excellent choice for applications needing strong disk and network performance, though there may be occasional limitations in multi-core processing under high loads.
