UpCloud United States Chicago AMD EPYC General Purpose Cloud Server Test and Review

We recently reviewed UpCloud‘s AMD EPYC General Purpose Cloud Server, which is based in Chicago, USA. This server runs on an AMD EPYC 7542 32-core Processor and boasts a setup of 2 CPU cores, 4 GB of RAM, 80 GB SSD storage, a 1 Gbps internet port, 4 TB of bandwidth, and both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

Our evaluation covered several key areas:

  • Performance was checked using the Basic Benchmark, Yabs, and Unix Benchmark tests.
  • Network speed across various locations was assessed through the Global Node Test.
  • Latency was measured with the Global Ping Test.
  • We tested media accessibility with the Media Unlock Test.
  • Connection quality was analyzed using the CloudFlare Internet Test.
  • Finally, web performance was evaluated with tools like PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix.

Let’s dive into how the server stacks up in these areas!

About UpCloud

Founded in 2012, UpCloud hails from the tech-savvy nation of Finland. This European cloud service provider has made a name by offering a lightning-fast and reliable cloud platform. What sets UpCloud apart is its incredible 100% uptime Service Level Agreement (SLA). This means they guarantee their servers will be available and operational 100% of the time. This level of reliability is a game-changer for businesses that depend on their websites and online services.

UpCloud manages and maintains a network of twelve data centers across the globe. These data centers are strategically located in major cities such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, Madrid, San Jose, New York, Chicago, Warsaw, and Helsinki. This global presence ensures that you can count on UpCloud to deliver top-notch performance no matter where you are.

Now, let’s talk about what UpCloud can do for you. UpCloud offers Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), which includes features like MaxIOPS block storage and Simple backup service. These services are designed to provide scalable and flexible solutions for your business needs. Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a small to medium-sized enterprise working in managed hosting, IT services, e-commerce, SaaS, or PaaS, UpCloud has got you covered.

One of the things that impresses me about UpCloud is its commitment to performance. Cloud Spectator, a consulting company focused on the cloud computing industry, has recognized UpCloud twice as the number one provider in terms of performance. This recognition speaks volumes about UpCloud’s dedication to providing the best possible service to its customers.

Conclusion

Starting with general performance metrics, the server’s I/O speed consistently hits 381 MB/s, which qualifies as good but not excellent. The Geekbench 6 results showed single and multi-core scores of 1189 and 2086, respectively. These scores indicate a solid performance, with the single-core result being good and the multi-core score edging towards excellent.

The Yabs performance bench highlighted consistent read/write operations, with mixed R/W 50/50 speeds best at larger block sizes, boasting speeds up to 802.43 MB/s, thus demonstrating strong capabilities in handling large data volumes efficiently.

Network performance was another critical aspect of our testing. The server maintained exceptionally high upload and download speeds in most locations across the U.S. and performed reasonably well globally despite a notable drop in speeds at farther distances like Singapore. Latency remained low in the U.S. but increased with geographic distance, which is expected.

Lastly, our UnixBench results reflected the server’s robust CPU performance under multi-threading conditions. The scores massively increased when running two parallel copies of tests, indicating excellent scalability and responsiveness of the server to multiple tasks.

In conclusion, UpCloud’s Chicago-based server shows remarkable strength in handling large volumes of data and multiple tasks without significantly losing speed or performance, even when operating under increased demands. The drop in network performance over long distances is noted but does not overshadow the server’s impressive capabilities. This makes it a reliable choice for businesses needing a strong-performing server with excellent scalability.
