Exoscale Germany Frankfurt Intel Xeon CPU Optimized Cloud Hosting Test and Review
We recently put Exoscale‘s CPU Optimized Cloud Hosting in Frankfurt, Germany, to test its performance across various metrics (Plan: Extra-Large). The server, powered by an Intel Xeon Processor (Skylake), boasts 8 CPU cores, 16 GB of RAM, 50 GB SSD storage, and a 10 Gbps internet connection. The review covered multiple testing parameters, including I/O speed, connectivity speeds across global nodes, disk throughput, CPU performance, and comprehensive benchmarks like Geekbench and UnixBench.
About Exoscale
Exoscale is a privacy-minded Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) platform that offers on-demand resources to build your applications. It’s the creation of a team of IT operations veterans who have turned into cloud enthusiasts. They believe that future applications will be cloud-native, and with Exoscale, they’re building infrastructure and services to help European teams develop such applications.
First and foremost, they offer Compute services. These are high-performance SSD cloud servers that provide self-sustained zones for resilient deployments. They also offer features like snapshots, custom templates, and instance pools to manage groups of machines.
Next, we have the Kubernetes service. This service allows you to start Kubernetes clusters in just 120 seconds. It provides full control plane lifecycle management and deep NLB integration.
Exoscale offers a fully managed Database as a Service (DBaaS). This includes managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, Apache Kafka, OpenSearch, and Redis® databases. They also offer managed Grafana.
In addition, Exoscale provides Object Storage. This highly available multi-redundancy object storage offers low latency, high bandwidth, and public or private secure HTTP(s) access. Its S3-compatible API allows for simple tooling integration.
Furthermore, Exoscale offers Block Storage. This provides ultra-low latency for high-performance workloads. You can attach multiple volumes per instance, and it has a highly available NVME-based architecture with multiple copies of data.

Admin Control Panel
Upon logging in, you’ll find a simple and intuitive user interface. This interface is designed to make powerful concepts easy for teams of any size. Whether you’re a solo developer or part of a large team, the portal provides the tools to manage your infrastructure effectively.
One of the key features of the Admin Control Portal is its ability to manage various services offered by Exoscale. These services range from Compute, Kubernetes, Database as a Service (DBaaS), Object Storage, Block Storage, and GPU Servers to Networking services. Each service has a dedicated section within the portal, allowing easy navigation and management.
Another noteworthy feature is the portal’s support capabilities. If you ever need help, you can contact Exoscale’s support directly from the portal. This ensures that assistance is just a few clicks away should you encounter any issues or questions.
Regarding security, the portal allows you to manage team members and control access to your infrastructure with organizations, keypairs, and multi-factor authentication. This ensures your cloud resources are secure and accessible only to authorized individuals.

Payments
Regarding payment methods, Exoscale accepts Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards that support 3D Secure payment verification. They also accept PayPal, but only in Pre-Paid Mode. This provides users with a variety of options to choose from, ensuring a seamless payment experience.
Exoscale offers two primary billing modes: Pre-paid and Post-paid. In the Pre-paid mode, you add funds to your organization before consuming resources. When your organization’s balance reaches zero, the organization is suspended. Therefore, keeping the credit in your account topped up is crucial to avoid suspension.
On the other hand, in the Post-paid mode, you can consume resources freely. Exoscale automatically charges your default credit card every month for the amount you have consumed. Established companies with a proven line of credit can request access to post-paid billing with wire transfers after a manual vetting process. Every month, they will issue an invoice to your company.

Customer Support
Let’s delve into the customer support offered by Exoscale. They believe in providing hands-on, direct contact with the engineers powering their cloud platform. They understand that running operations can be challenging and care about you regardless of your company’s size.
Exoscale offers a variety of support plans to fit your needs best. These plans range from Built-In, Starter, Pro, to Enterprise. Each plan offers different levels of support, response times, and additional features.
- The Built-In plan is for all customers and is perfect for testers, developers, and non-critical applications. It offers best-effort response time and support during office hours. You can open and track tickets within the portal.
- The Starter plan is designed for startups and SMEs running production infrastructures. It offers a four-hour guaranteed response time, additional authentication options, and detailed usage reporting.
- The Pro and Enterprise plans will be available soon. The Pro plan offers a one-hour response time and out-of-the-box services to detect and track events on the platform. The Enterprise plan offers a response time of 30 minutes (24/7), support via ticket, phone, or chat, and your dedicated Customer Success Manager.
Email and phone are two main options for non-customers to contact the Exoscale support team. If you’re a customer, your best bet is to log in to your client portal and send in a support ticket. You can also reach their support directly in the portal.
Conclusion
In our basic benchmark testing, I/O speeds averaged 344.7 MB/s, which, though reliable, is just short of the ‘good’ category defined in speed ratings. Connectivity tests revealed impressive upload and download speeds, notably in European and North American locations, with the best speeds observed via a server in Amsterdam. However, Asian cities like Singapore and Tokyo showed significantly lower connectivity, highlighting regional discrepancies.
The Yabs performance test gave more promising results. Disk speed tests showed particularly high performance with mixed read/write operations, achieving speeds of over 3.17 GB/s for larger blocks, categorized as excellent. The Geekbench 6 results mirrored this with a single-core score of 971, placing it in the upper range of standard performance. In contrast, the multi-core score 5477 was impressive, advocating for strong overall CPU capability.
UnixBench tests with single and multiple parallel operations underscored the server’s robust handling of multiple tasks and high computational demands, with scores significantly exceeding the baseline in multi-threaded scenarios. This comprehensive testing positions Exoscale’s server as a potent option for CPU-intensive applications, showcasing its ability to handle diverse loads and complex operations easily.
In conclusion, Exoscale’s offering provides a highly competitive service that’s particularly adept at handling high-demand tasks across varied operational contexts. While it excels in CPU performance and mixed disk operations, there’s room for improvement in I/O speeds and regional connectivity outside Europe and North America. These insights can guide potential users in aligning their hosting choices with specific performance needs.
