Equinix China Hong Kong Intel Xeon E-2278G On Demand Bare Metal Server Test and Review
We recently had the opportunity to test the Equinix China Hong Kong On Demand Bare Metal Server. It’s equipped with an Intel(R) Xeon(R) E-2278G CPU @ 3.40GHz Processor, sporting a setup that includes 32GB RAM, two 480GB SSDs, two 10Gbps Network Ports, one Intel HD Graphics P630, one IPv4 address, and one IPv6 address.
Our team runs several tests to see how it performs: the Basic Benchmark, Yabs, and Unix Benchmark to check its essential metrics, the Global Node Test for a thorough network check, and the Global Ping Test to measure latency.
We’ll also see how it handles media with the Media Unlock Test, examine connection quality with the CloudFlare Internet Test, and check web performance using tools like PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix Performance.
About Equinix
Equinix Metal represents a significant advancement in the field of digital infrastructure. It’s a service that provides high-performance bare metal directly integrated with Equinix Fabric. This integration allows users to deploy powerful infrastructure across global locations in minutes.

Equinix Metal Console is a web-based interface that serves as a control center for managing your Equinix Metal account. Let’s delve into its key features and functionalities.
Firstly, the console provides a user-friendly interface that allows you to navigate various sections easily. The console’s home page is divided into several main parts, each serving a specific purpose.
The ‘Organizations’ section is the highest level of collating resources. It groups users and permissions and sets the billing for everything inside. You can manage your organizations from this section, update the billing, invite people to your team, and manage and create projects.
Next, we have the ‘Projects’ section. A project is a grouping of resources within an organization, like servers and networking. Each project shares private IP space among its servers and interconnects them.
The ‘Resources’ section includes the actual Metal resources within your project. They include computing resources (servers), networking resources, private interconnections to other resources, projects, clouds, and settings.
In addition, the Equinix Metal Console also allows for the provisioning of all Equinix Metal infrastructure, including servers, storage, VLANs, IP addresses, Virtual Connections, and Dedicated Ports. This can be done from the console or Equinix Metal API.

Payments
Equinix Metal offers a straightforward and flexible payment system. When creating an Equinix Metal organization, you must enter a payment method. You can use either a credit card or a PayPal account. If you choose to use a credit card, you need to provide the name on the card, the credit card number, the expiration month and year, the CVV code, and the country and zip code.
Once you’ve established your account and organization, you can update and change your payment method anytime. It’s important to note that you must have a primary payment method associated with your organization if there is at least one project in that organization.
Adding a new payment method is simple. To add a new credit card, you click “+,” select “Credit Card,” and fill in the new credit card details into the fields in the slide-out menu. If you want to add a PayPal account, click “+,” select “PayPal,” then log in to your PayPal account and authorize Equinix Metal to charge your PayPal account.
Enterprises or organizations that prefer to be billed on terms instead of using a credit card or PayPal for automated charges can contact their account manager or the customer success team at [email protected]. Equinix Metal then makes the account information available for you to pay your invoices on the Payment Methods page.

Customer Support
Equinix Metal offers a comprehensive customer support system. The primary platform for this is the Equinix Customer Portal. This intuitive self-service portal provides fast and seamless support. It allows you to manage support cases, orders for new services, access requests, and order lifecycle. You can also get notifications of events affecting operations, report issues, open trouble tickets, modify account information, manage reports, and view billing history.
In addition to the portal, Equinix Metal offers several other support options. You can start a live chat with a customer support agent. This option is available in English. You can call them if you prefer to speak directly with a customer support agent. For non-urgent requests, you can send an email to [email protected].
Equinix Metal also provides a range of self-service resources. These include Equinix Product Documentation, which offers resources to start quickly and view product availability. The Service Availability Status allows you to view the operational status of Equinix services. The Equinix Community Hub is a platform where you can share knowledge, speak to industry experts, and engage with peers around the globe.
Conclusion
The I/O speed tests revealed consistent performance with an average speed of 412.3MB/s, marking it as good but not exceptional. In contrast, the server’s connectivity and bandwidth capabilities were remarkable, especially highlighted by its performance in Hong Kong, with upload and download speeds nearing 9Gbps and very low latency figures. The global connectivity tests across other regions like Singapore, Tokyo, and Mumbai also showcased impressive bandwidth speeds.
The Yabs performance bench mixed R/W tests showed a total I/O speed of 419.05MB/s and 454.22MB/s for larger blocks, confirming the server’s strong performance in handling mixed read/write operations. Furthermore, the Geekbench 6 Benchmark Test provided a single-core score of 1882, indicating good CPU performance, while the multi-core score of 8775 underscored the server’s capability to manage tasks that demand higher parallel processing efficiently.
UnixBench scores provided deep insights into the server’s CPU performance, scoring exceptionally high in single and parallel test setups. The tests, ranging from computation (Dhrystone and Whetstone tests) to real-world tasks (file copying, shell scripts), exhibited the server’s robust and reliable computing performance.
In conclusion, the Equinix China Hong Kong On Demand Bare Metal Server stands out for its formidable bandwidth and connectivity, reliable CPU performance, and competent handling of mixed read/write operations. It’s a solid choice for businesses looking for a powerful server solution to manage high data transfer comfortably while maintaining low latency across a global network. Whether it’s web hosting, media streaming, or handling heavy computational tasks, this server is built to deliver excellent performance.
