Exoscale Switzerland Zurich Intel Xeon CPU Optimized Cloud Hosting Test and Review
This review will closely examine Exoscale‘s cloud hosting service, designed for heavy-duty computing work and based in Zurich, Switzerland (Plan: Extra-Large). The service uses a powerful Intel Xeon processor with these specs: 8 CPU cores, 16 GB of memory, 50 GB of SSD storage, and a super-fast 10 Gbps internet connection, plus you get one IPv4 address to use.
Our tests include a basic speed check, Yabs, and Unix Benchmark to handle standard tasks, a worldwide network test to see how well it talks to other servers, and a ping test to check its reflexes. We’re also seeing if it can stream content without a hitch, checking internet connection quality via CloudFlare, and putting its web-loading speed to the test with PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix.
About Exoscale
Exoscale Cloud is a European cloud hosting service that provides a range of services to cater to the diverse needs of its users. It is known for its focus on simplicity, security, and privacy. The platform was founded in 2011 in Lausanne, Switzerland, to provide simple, scalable, and affordable cloud infrastructure services from safe locations.
Exoscale Cloud offers high-performance SSD cloud servers and self-sustained zones for resilient deployments. These servers come with features like snapshots and custom templates, instance pools to manage groups of machines and anti-affinity groups. The platform also provides IAM and organization management.
One of the key offerings of Exoscale Cloud is its scalable Kubernetes Service. This service allows users to start Kubernetes clusters in just 100 seconds. It also fully controls the plane lifecycle management, CLI, API, portal, and Terraform support. The service is deeply integrated with NLB.
Exoscale Cloud offers a fully managed database as a service (DBaaS). This includes managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, Apache Kafka, OpenSearch, and Redis® databases. The platform also provides managed Grafana. The DBaaS is designed for end-to-end GDPR compliance.
The platform’s object storage is highly available and offers multi-redundancy. It provides low latency, high bandwidth, and public or private secure HTTP(s) access. The object storage is compatible with the S3 API for simple tooling integration.

Payments
Exoscale Cloud offers a flexible payment system that caters to the needs of its users. The platform supports multiple currencies, including CHF, EUR, and USD. It accepts various payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, supporting 3D Secure verification. PayPal is also accepted, but only in Pre-Paid Mode.
Exoscale Cloud provides two billing modes: pre-paid and post-paid. In the pre-paid billing mode, users add funds to their organization before consuming resources. When the organization’s balance reaches zero, the organization is suspended. Therefore, users need to keep their accounts topped up to avoid suspension.
Post-paid billing allows users to register one or more credit cards and consume resources freely. Exoscale Cloud automatically charges the user’s default credit card for the amount consumed every month. Established companies with a proven line of credit can request access to post-paid billing with wire transfers after a manual vetting process. In this case, Exoscale Cloud will invoice the company every month.
For pre-paid billing mode, invoices are emailed immediately after the payment has been successfully processed. Post-paid billing sends monthly invoices based on the user’s registration date. In post-paid billing with a credit card, invoices are sent three days before withdrawing the invoiced amount from the user’s credit card. Wire invoices are not automatically charged from the user’s bank account. Users must manually pay wire invoices within ten days after the invoice date.

- Starter: This plan is for startups and SMEs running production infrastructures. It includes everything from the Built-In plan, a four-hour guaranteed response time, additional authentication options, and detailed usage reporting.
- Pro: This plan will be available soon. It offers a one-hour response time and out-of-the-box services to detect and track events on the platform.
- Enterprise: This plan will also be available soon. It offers a response time of 30 minutes (24/7), support via ticket, phone, or chat, and a dedicated Customer Success Manager.
For non-customers, there are two main options for contacting the Exoscale support team: email and phone. If you’re a customer, your best bet is to log in to your client portal and send a support ticket. At any point in time, if you need further support, you can contact them via a support ticket (existing customers only) or a contact form.
Conclusion
First, we tested the I/O (Input/Output) performance, which tells us how quickly data can be read and written. Our findings were impressive, with speeds consistently over 500 MB/s, peaking at an average of 582.7 MB/s, meaning it’s more than just ‘good’ – it’s knocking on the door of ‘excellent.’
Next up, network prowess was gauged through uploads, downloads, and latency checks across various global points. The results were mostly stellar: over 3000 Mbps for uploads and 8000 Mbps for downloads in many sites, with the lowest latency at a mere 0.42 ms. There were, however, weak spots in certain parts of China, hinting at potential regional limitations.
The server did phenomenally well in mixed read/write tasks gauged by Yabs, demonstrating speeds up to 1.89 GB/s. Now, onto raw computing power – the Geekbench test delivered a single-core score of 1101, placing it comfortably in the ‘good’ range, and a multi-core score that soared to 5937, which verifies robust multi-tasking capabilities.
Lastly, UnixBench gave us a broad look at how the server handles various CPU-intensive tasks. The single-threaded scores showcased strong performance, but the multi-threaded runs stood out even more, with some measures jumping to over 12,000 times the baseline score.
In conclusion, Exoscale’s Zurich service shines bright for demanding applications. With I/O speeds flirting with excellence, a strong network showing, commendable computing might, and overwhelmingly high benchmark scores, it’s proven to be a powerhouse for single and multi-threaded tasks. For businesses targeting European audiences and beyond—except for some parts of China—it’s a reliable choice that can handle a heavy lift.
