DigitalOcean Germany Frankfurt Intel Xeon Platinum 8358 General Purpose Dedicated Server Test and Review

We recently reviewed the DigitalOcean server in Frankfurt, Germany. This machine has a top-tier Intel Xeon Platinum 8358 processor at 2.60GHz. Here are the configurations: 2-core CPU, 8 GB of memory, 30 GB of NVMe SSD storage, a 10 Gbps network connection, and 4 TB data transfer.

For our testing, we ran several straightforward checks. We started with basic performance tests to understand its power and speed. Then, we looked at how well it connects globally, testing how quickly it sends and receives data worldwide and how stable the connection stays under different conditions.

We also tested how well it accesses media from different regions. Finally, we used popular tools like PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix to see how well websites would run on this server.

About DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean Dedicated CPU Droplets are a type of virtual machine (VM) that provide a consistently high level of performance by ensuring that your Droplet has access to the full computing power of your virtual server at all times, unlike shared CPU Droplets, where the hyper-thread allocated to the Droplet may be shared between multiple other Droplets.

There are four dedicated CPU Droplets: General Purpose, CPU-Optimized, Memory-Optimized, and Storage-Optimized. The Droplet plan you choose determines the amount of resources allocated to Droplet.

One of the key features of Dedicated CPU Droplets is their consistent and robust performance. They utilize some of the latest generations of Intel® Xeon® CPUs, providing consistently high application performance.

Another important feature is their super fast NVMe storage. NVMe solid-state drives (SSD) use parallelism to deliver faster disk performance than regular SSDs. Workloads that require many transactions will have much lower latency with NVMe SSDs.

Dedicated CPU Droplets are also known for their high outbound data speeds. With five times higher outbound network speeds when compared to their Regular variant, the new Premium CPU-Optimized Droplets make delivering high-quality digital experiences easier than ever.

Notably, high speeds were recorded in internet performance, with upload speeds peaking at 9993.15 Mbps and download speeds reaching up to 24919.26 Mbps in various global locations.

We also conducted mixed read/write speed tests that showcased the server’s ability to handle simultaneous operations. Here, results showed read and write speeds comfortably hitting over 1.5 GB/s in 64k block tests. Similarly impressive performance was noted in the Geekbench and UnixBench scores, with the latter providing an index score of 2040.0 when operating on all cores—signifying strong overall CPU performance.
