OVHcloud United States Oregon Public Cloud CPU Optimised Instance Test and Review

We recently reviewed OVHcloud‘s United States Oregon Cloud Server, designed for heavy-duty processing. This server uses an Intel Core Processor from the Haswell generation and comes with this setup: it has 4 CPU cores, 15 GB of memory, 100 GB of fast SSD storage, and an internet connection speed of 250 Mbps.

We ran a bunch of tests to see how well it performs:

  • Basic checks to measure its raw power and speed.
  • Yabs and Unix Benchmark tests to get down to the nitty-gritty of its performance.
  • Global Node and Global Ping tests to test the network’s reach and responsiveness.
  • We checked if the server could access media content from different regions.
  • We assessed the quality of its internet connection using a CloudFlare test.
  • Lastly, we used tools like PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix to see how well it handles web content.

Conclusion

In our first series of tests, the server showed impressive I/O speeds with an average of 774.7 MB/s across three runs. Its upload and download speeds were consistent and speedy across various global locations, with latency as expected—low in nearby Los Angeles (28.82 ms) and higher across continents like Paris (160.77 ms) and Mumbai (273.32 ms).

The Yabs benchmark showed strong mixed read/write capabilities, especially with larger block sizes, where it achieved up to 3.01 GB/s. Geekbench results were solid, with a single-core score of 1089 and a multi-core score of 3015, reflecting a balanced performance for both single-threaded and multi-threaded applications.

Regarding regional accessibility, the server had mixed results: While it successfully accessed US-based services like Dazn, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube Premium, it didn’t support streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, or region-specific platforms like HotStar and Viu.com. However, it was able to connect to some regional content, showcasing its ability to serve content to various areas, albeit with limitations.

In conclusion, the OVHcloud Oregon Cloud Server showed formidable processing power, stable and high-speed connectivity, and the ability to handle varying loads efficiently. Yet, depending on where your audience is and what services you need, its regional content accessibility may be limited. It’s a strong choice for resource-intensive tasks, offering impressive specs that would meet the needs of most users looking for a powerful cloud server.
